Virgil Percec, Ph.D.

P. Roy Vagelos Chair and Professor of Chemistry

Virgil Percec was born and educated in Romania (Ph.D., 1976). After postdoctoral appointments at the Universities of Freiburg, Germany, and Akron, US, he joined the Department of Macromolecular Science at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland as an Assistant Professor in 1982. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1984, to Professor in 1986, and to Leonard Case Jr. Chair in 1993. In 1999 he moved to the University of Pennsylvania as P. Roy Vagelos Chair and Professor of Chemistry.

Angely spent the summer of 2015 in the group working on the synthesis of novel polyamide dendrimers. She is currently continuing her undergraduate studies at the University of Puerto Rico.

Rishab spent the summer of 2016 in our group, working on the nickel catalysis project under the supervision of Dr. Jagadeesh Malineni. He is currently studying at West Windsor-Plainsboro High School South, NJ.

Matthew Bunner

Matt spent the summer of 2014 in the group working on Ni-based catalysts for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-couplings. Matt is currently in the second year of Penn Chemistry's Ph.D. program, working on tetrazine chemistry with Prof. Amos B. Smith, III.

Recent Member - Summer Student

Louise spent the summer of 2015 in the group as part of the Institute of International Education's Brazil Scientific Mobility Program. Louise worked on the synthesis of glycodendrimers and their self-assembly into vesicles. She is currently finishing her studies in Salvador, Brazil.

Cody is a rising Senior at Penn, majoring in Science Technology and Society, working on the dendrimersomes project with Qi. Outside of the lab, Cody is a keen golfer, and represents Penn on the D1 varsity team.

Salil is currently a senior at West Windsor-Plainsboro High School South, NJ. He joined the group in October 2016 and is working with graduate student Ben on the synthesis of self-assembling perylene bisimide building blocks.

Mojtaba  Enayati, Ph.D.

Mojtaba Enayati, Ph.D.

Current Member - Postdoctoral Researcher

Mojtaba joined the group in June 2015 as a Postdoctoral Researcher, having completed his Ph.D. studies at the University of Tehran, Iran, under the supervision of Professor Mahdavi on the topic of high impact polypropylenes. His current research focuses on SET-LRP and its application to acrylates and other substrates.

Henrique spent the summer of 2015 in the group as part of the Institute of International Education's Brazil Scientific Mobility Program. Henrique worked on the synthesis of self-assembling dendritic perylene bisimide derivatives. He is currently finishing his studies in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Elodie spent the summer of 2015 in the laboratory through the Penn Nano/Bio Interface Center's exchange program with Grenoble Institute of Technology. She worked on glycodendrimersomes and their interactions with lectins. Elodie is currently finishing her studies at Phelma INP, Grenoble.

Syeda Shaista  Gillani

Syeda Shaista Gillani

Recent Member - Visiting Scholar

Shaista joined us as a Visiting Scholar from the University of Punjab, in Lahore, Pakistan, from October 2015 to March 2016, during which time she contributed to the development of a new method for the synthesis of aliphatic polyamide dendrimers. Her research interests in Pakistan lie primarily in organic synthesis, specifically the synthesis of photoluminescent tetraarylated cyclopentadienes and their heteroanalogues. She now holds the position of Assistant Professor at Lahore Garrison University, Pakistan.

Silvia  Grama, Ph.D.

Silvia Grama, Ph.D.

Current Member - Postdoctoral Researcher

Silvia has been a Postdoctoral Researcher in the group since November 2015. Her research interests include SET-LRP and the development of new methodologies in dendrimer synthesis. She obtained her M.Sc. (2008) and Ph.D. (2011) in Chemistry from Gheorghe Asachi Technical University of Iași, Romania under the supervision of Professor Nicolae Hurduc and has since conducted research at the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry in Prague.

Nicholas  Gutsche

Recent Member - Summer Student

Nick has spent several summers in the lab, both as a high school student (from the Charter School of Wilmington, Wilmington, DE) and as an undergraduate (from Kenyon College, Gambier, OH). Nick has contributed to various projects, most recently Ni-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions. He is currently majoring in Chemistry at Kenyon College.

D. J. Hoffman

Recent Member - Undergraduate Student

DJ spent over a year in the group as an undergraduate student, working on the Ni-catalyzed cross-coupling of aryl substrates for the synthesis of new dendrimers. He is now studying for a Ph.D. in Chemistry in the group of Michael D. Fayer at Stanford University.

Ryan L. Jezorek

Ryan L. Jezorek

Current Member - Graduate Student

Ryan Jezorek obtained his B.S. from the State University of New York at Binghamton, where he worked to develop cathode materials for lithium ion batteries in the lab of M. Stanley Whittingham. His current research focuses on copper catalyzed Single Electron Transfer – Living Radical Polymerization (SET-LRP) and nickel catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions.
