In this course we will explore what it means to study the European musical tradition. We will approach the diverse musics that constitute the classical tradition from a variety of scholarly perspectives. The goal of this class is to listen deeply and think broadly and to prepare you for future musical research. We will consider questions such as: what sort of object is music? Where is it located? What does it mean to say a work is "canonic"? What is left out of the story? How have we constructed our story? What does it mean to study music? What is the history of music a history of? A history of composers? A history of great masterpieces? We might also ask: how have people divided the musical from the non-musical? How has that changed in different periods and what can we learn from those changes?
